World Record of the Largest Handmade Calligraphic Carpets Inspired by Artwork of Syed Sadequain Ahmad Naqvi

A new world record has been set by a pair of calligraphic carpets installed at the Provincial Assembly of Sindh in Karachi, Pakistan. Crafted by MWCarpets and inspired by the work of the famous artist Syed Sadequain Ahmad Naqvi, these carpets showcase traditional art and exceptional skill.
Technical Details:
- Quality: 9.16 square/inch with 3,456 knots per square foot, totaling 449,280 knots.
- Materials: Made from 70% wool and 30% silk on a cotton foundation.
- Dyes: Natural dyes using Swiss colors.
- Size: 10 feet by 13 feet (3.048m x 3.9624m).
- Knot Type: Single-knotted PAK-Finest-Knot.
- Loom: Woven on a vintage, oversized wooden loom.
- Production Period: August 2011 to September 2012; installed in 2013.
- Labor: Four skilled artisans completed the work over several months.
Each carpet features Qur’anic verses taken from Sadequain’s calligraphy. A computer-assisted design ensured that every knot was placed with accuracy.

- Dyeing: Natural dyes provided authentic and lasting colors.
- Weaving: Four craftsmen worked for over a year to complete the design.

Every step was performed with care and respect, especially given the religious significance of the calligraphy.

They honor Sadequain’s legacy in Islamic calligraphy and highlight Pakistan’s rich tradition in textile arts. The installation in a government building further underscores their importance.
The project was a collaboration with Siddiqui and Naqvi Associates & Architects Limited, led by Syed Zia Askari, ensuring that high standards were met throughout production.
